Since I have been interested in raw food but know little about the subject, this looks like a documentary I might like. <p>The title of this blog post is Simply Raw &#8211; Reversing Diabetes in 30  Days. Reversing diabetes in 30 days &#8211; that&#8217;s quite a bold statement. This documentary apparently shows some people who have been able to do this by going through the procedure shown in this film. On their <a title="Raw for 30 Days" href="http://everydayimprovement.com/blog/rawfor30days" target="_blank">site</a> there is a medical disclaimer which states:</p>

<p>A few months ago I wrote an article about <a href="http://everydayimprovement.com/blog/2008/11/10-ways-to-prevent-a-cold/" target="_blank">10 ways to prevent a cold</a>. Today I came across a list of <a href="http://listverse.com/2008/11/05/top-10-myths-about-the-common-cold/" target="_blank">10 myths about the common cold</a>.</p>
<p>Those myths don&#8217;t seem to conflict with the 10 ways I listed to prevent a cold, with two possible exceptions.</p>
<p><strong>Weakened Immune System</strong></p>
<p>My advice to keep the stress level low seems to conflict with myth #8 (weak immune system).</p>
<p>Way #3 &#8211; Keep the Stress Level Low</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Studies have shown that people experiencing emotional stress have weakened immune systems and are more likely to catch a cold. If you feel stressed out at work or at home, take a deep breath and calm down.&#8221;</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Myth #8 &#8211; Weak Immune System</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;A weakened immune system does not heighten the risks of catching a cold. Healthy and unhealthy people exhibit the same amount of susceptibility to colds in studies that have been done. Interestingly, the same study found that 95% of people who had the cold virus directly applied to their nasal membranes became infected, but only 75% of them exhibited any symptoms of the cold. This is called an “asymptomatic infection”.&#8221;</p>
</blockquote>
<p><strong>Vitamins and Minerals</strong><br />
My advice to take supplements seems to conflict with myth #7 (Vitamin C).</p>
<p>Way #5 &#8211; Take Supplements</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;A healthy dose of Zinc, Goldenseal, Chamomile, Echinacea, garlic and Vitamins B, C and E can reduce your chance of catching a cold or reduce its impact. You don’t necessarily have to take tablets, some of these are also available in the form of herbal teas.&#8221;
</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Myth #7 &#8211; Vitamin C</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is a myth that loads of vitamin c and zinc help to stave off (or cure) a cold. While it is often a good idea to take vitamin and mineral supplements, they have no effect on the cold virus. Once the cold hits, you are better off taking painkillers and waiting it out.&#8221;
</p>
</blockquote>
<p><strong>My Advice</strong><br />
In both cases you can&#8217;t go wrong with my advice. It might not always keep off the cold, but in my opinion it certainly keeps you healthier.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t necessarily have to follow my advice. Look at both lists and form your own opinion. Let me know what you think on this subject in the comments below.</p>

In this post I will go into my own experiences with QT and share some of the resources I found on the internet.</p>
<p><strong>My Own Experience</strong><br />
I&#8217;ve been experimenting with Quantum Touch (QT) for some time now and the results so far look very promising. The breathing exercises have helped me to relax. I&#8217;ve also tried to help people with all kinds of pains (neck, back, head, arms, legs) and with most of them the pain stopped (if sometimes only temporarily). Nearly all of them experienced some sort of pain relief. I have done Reiki I and II, so that could have given me a head start in applying QT. In fact, I&#8217;ve heard from several people that QT can really strengthen your Reiki sessions.</p>
<p><strong>What is Quantum Touch</strong><br />
QT was introduced by Richard Gordon in his book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Quantum-Touch-Power-Third-Richard-Gordon/dp/1556435940/" target="_blank">Quantum Touch: The Power to Heal</a>.  Richard Gordon tells us that being a healer doesn&#8217;t mean that you heal other people. People can only heal themselves. Or to quote Richard Gordon:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;A healer is someone who was sick and got well. A great healer is a healer who was really sick and got well quickly.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>You can&#8217;t heal someone else. You can only heal yourself. But you can help others with Quantum Touch.</p>
<p>I have only read the book, but I think it&#8217;s a great introduction to QT and it gives you many exercises to get you started. You can also attend QT workshops. If you just read the book passively, then you probably won&#8217;t get that much out of it. If you know yourself that well, maybe then attending a workshop could be the best thing for you. I&#8217;m still thinking of attending a workshop. It looks like a great way to practise with like-minded people.</p>

<p><strong>Criticism</strong><br />
A few days ago I read a post about QT on a blog with the name <a href="http://crapbasedmedicine.wordpress.com/2008/08/07/quantum-touch/" target="_blank">Crap-Based Medicine</a>. It&#8217;s one of the silliest posts I have ever read, but sometimes it&#8217;s good to have a look at what the critics have to say. It was very entertaining  to read the comments on that post. Several people claim that an experiment by an 11 year old girl called Emily Rose (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Rosa" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>) is proof that things like Therapeutic Touch and QT don&#8217;t work. You have to be critical with alternative healing methods. I&#8217;m sure there is a bunch of crap out there. There are people out there taking advantage of others by making all kinds of ridiculous claims and asking ridiculous prices for sessions. But that does not mean that there aren&#8217;t any good alternatives to the traditional healing methods like taking medicines. And I think QT is a very good alternative.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line</strong><br />
I don&#8217;t really care why QT works. All I can say is that I have had very good experiences with Reiki and QT and I&#8217;ve also heard great and inspirational stories from people that I trust whole-heartedly. I&#8217;m always open to new ideas, but I also like to take in the criticism to get a balanced view of a new idea. All things have their place. Traditional healing methods won&#8217;t disappear because of QT. They still have a lot of use. But so does QT. After experiencing QT for myself and taking in the criticism I like to see myself as a believer.</p>

Meat the Truth is a documentary, presented by Marianne Thieme (leader of the Dutch Party for the Animals), which forms an addendum to earlier films that have been made about climate change and global warming. Although <a title="An Inconvenient Truth" href="http://www.amazon.com/Inconvenient-Truth-Al-Gore/dp/B000ICL3KG/?tag=everydayimpro-20" target="_blank">An Inconvenient Truth</a> by Al Gore succeeded in drawing public attention to the issue of global warming, it ignored one of the most important causes of climate change: intensive livestock production. According to Meat the Truth livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars and trucks added together. The calculations used in the film derive from and have been validated by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN (FAO), the World Watch Institute, the Institute for Environmental Studies of the Free University Amsterdam and numerous other authoritative sources. That means that you can do more for the environment by eating less meat than by leaving your car at home. These episodes show some of the problems concerning meat and dairy production. If you would like more information on this topic, I suggest you read the book <a title="The Food Revolution" href="http://www.amazon.com/Food-Revolution-Your-Diet-World/dp/1573247022/?tag=everydayimpro-20" target="_blank">The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World</a> by John Robbins. For me this was truly a life changing book. The book comes up with facts on meat and dairy, that I had never heard of before. I&#8217;ve been vegan ever since I read it.</p>
<p>Does that mean everybody should be vegan from now on? Well, that could be a big step for a lot of people. What you can do in the short term is eat less meat and dairy. For instance, make one day in the week a meat-less day. This can be as simple as replacing the meat at dinner with a tofu burger. If more people do this, this can become a great step in saving our planet. And this can also do wonders for your own health too.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve been using EFT for a while now and I&#8217;m amazed at the power of this simple method. In this article I want to share with you the basics to get you started. The Emotional Freedom Technique is an emotional, needle free version of acupuncture. According to <a title="emofree.com" href="http://everydayimprovement.com/recommends/emofree" target="_blank">emofree.com</a> it is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body&#8217;s subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. By tapping on certain points of your body you basically tap your problems away. Now you don&#8217;t have to believe all this. Just try it out for yourself and notice how you feel afterwards.</p>
<p>Below I will give a shortcut to the basic recipe mentioned in Gary Craig&#8217;s book, which you can download for free at <a title="emofree.com" href="http://everydayimprovement.com/recommends/emofree" target="_blank">emofree.com</a>.</p>
<p><strong>The Steps</strong><br />
What I&#8217;m going to explain below are not the full steps. This is a shortcut and usually this will do the trick. After you&#8217;ve tried out the steps below, I recommend you read the full &#8216;Basic Recipe&#8217; on <a title="emofree.com" href="http://everydayimprovement.com/recommends/emofree" target="_blank">emofree.com</a>.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Step 1: Measure.</strong> I&#8217;ve noticed a couple of times that I can&#8217;t remember I felt bad about something after tapping the problem away. Write down how you feel before and after going through the routine. Usually it takes just one round to decrease the intensity of a certain problem and sometimes it&#8217;s completely gone after going just once through the routine. And this only takes a minute of your time.Write down how you feel about your current problem on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being very intense and 1 not noticeable at all.</li>
<li><strong>Step 2: The setup.</strong> This step is necessary to make sure that your energy system is properly oriented before attempting to remove its disruptions. You repeat an affirmation three times while you tap the &#8220;karate chop&#8221; point. This point is located in the middle of the fleshy part on the outside of the hand between the top of the wrist bone and base of the baby finger. The affirmation you repeat while tapping the Karate Chop point is: &#8220;<em>Even though I have this [-insert problem-],I deeply and completely accept myself</em>&#8220;. Example: &#8220;Even though I have this headache, I deeply and completely accept myself&#8221; or &#8220;Even though I have this fear of heights, I deeply and completely accept myself&#8221;.</li>
<li><strong>Step 3: The sequence.</strong> In this step you tap a number of areas on your body with your the fingertips of your index finger and middle finger. Tap solidly but never so hard as to hurt or bruise yourself. Tap about 7 times on each of the following tapping points, while repeating the problem (this is called the reminder phrase, for example: &#8220;this headache&#8221;, &#8220;this fear of heights&#8221;):
<ol>
<li><strong>Eyebrow.</strong> At the beginning of the eyebrow, just above and to one side of the nose.</li>
<li><strong>Side of the eye.</strong> On the bone bordering the outside corner of the eye.</li>
<li><strong>Under the eye. </strong>On the bone under an eye about 1 inch below your pupil.</li>
<li><strong>Under the nose.</strong> On the small area between the bottom of your nose and the top of your upper lip.</li>
<li><strong>Chin.</strong> Midway between the point of your chin and the bottom of your lip.</li>
<li><strong>Collarbone.</strong> The junction where the sternum (breastbone), collarbone and the first rib meet. To locate it, first place your forefinger on the U-shaped notch at the top of the breastbone (about where a man would knot his tie). From the bottom of the U, move your forefinger down toward the navel 1 inch and then go the left (or right) 1 inch.</li>
<li><strong>Under the arm. </strong>On the side of the body at a point even with the nipple (for men) or in the middle of the bra strap (for women). It is about 4 inches below the armpit.</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li><strong>Step 4: Measure again.</strong> Measure how you feel about the problem again. If you are not satisfied yet, go to step 4.</li>
<li><strong>Step 5: Repeat step 2 en step 3, but change the affirmation and reminder phrase.</strong> The affirmation from step 2 can become something like this: &#8220;<em>Even thought I <strong>still</strong> have <strong>some</strong> of this [-insert problem-], I deeply and completely accept myself</em>&#8220;. The reminder phrase from step 3 is also easily adjusted. Just put the word <em>remaining</em> before the previously used phrase.</li>
</ol>
<p>The Basic Recipe from the <a title="manual on emofree.com" href="http://everydayimprovement.com/recommends/emofree" target="_blank">manual</a> has more steps and more tapping points. It also has a step that makes you hum a song for few seconds and count rapidly from 1 to 5. This is great if you want to use EFT in public. You can use the fear of looking stupid in front of other people as the first problem to tap away J.</p>
<p><strong>Tips</strong><br />
Here are few quick tips:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Testing.</strong> When testing or measuring the problem, you should always measure the intensity as it exists now, as you think about it, and not as you think it would be in the actual situation.</li>
<li><strong>Be specific.</strong> It is best, of course, to be specific whenever you can. That way you can efficiently zero in on an exact fear, pain, memory, etc., and eliminate it from your limiting baggage. Break down problems into the specific events that underlie them.</li>
<li><strong>Aspects.</strong> Each aspect, when present, is handled as a separate problem. So with each aspect go through the full routine.</li>
<li><strong>Which hand to use.</strong> It doesn&#8217;t really matter which hand you use or on which side of your body you tap. I use my dominant hand (right) and tap on that same side of my face and then I tap with my dominant hand (right) on the left side for my collarbone and under the arm.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Video</strong><br />
All the information above can be a bit overwhelming at first. Below is a video of Rod Sherman from <a title="Tap4Health.com" href="http://tap4health.com" target="_blank">Tap4Health.com</a>. He also shows a shortcut to the Basic Recipe. He uses a slightly different order of tapping and uses both hands to tap at most points. Try it out and see what works best for you.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few weeks ago we attended a workshop on Ayurvedic nutrition. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine from India. This was another step in becoming more aware of what we eat (after becoming vegan about a year ago). The workshop was held in the same place where we practice <a title="Power Yoga" href="http://everydayimprovement.com/blog/2009/02/5-reasons-to-start-doing-power-yoga/" target="_blank">power yoga</a> and the link with yoga was explained right at the beginning of the workshop. Yoga is about balancing the energy in your body and getting aware of your body. Nutrition is energy, so what you eat can cause a balance or disbalance of energy in your body. Most complaints are caused by a disbalance of energy in the body, so it is important to know what to eat and how to eat it.</p>
<p><strong>Basic Rules</strong><br />
Some of the basis rules about nutrition are:</p>
<ul>
<li>It must taste good.</li>
<li>It must be easy to digest.</li>
<li>It must be the right quantity. Think of it as adding wood to a fire. If you eat too much, you will extinguish the fire. If you don&#8217;t eat enough, the fire will not get enough fuel and will go out.</li>
<li>Only eat if your stomach is empty, when the last meal has been digested.</li>
<li>It has to collaborate, not thwart, with other nutrition.</li>
<li>Eat in a nice environment, with the right tools for pleasure (candles, nice music, etcetera).</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t eat too fast or too slow.</li>
<li>Focus on eating while you&#8217;re eating.</li>
<li>Only eat things that support your dosha (vata, pitta or kapha &#8211; further explained below).</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Doshas</strong><br />
There are 3 doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. A dosha is a combination of the 5 elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth). Your dosha stays the same during your whole life. As a child you have the purest dosha. Sometimes it gets out of balance by several influences when you are an adolescent or an adult.</p>
<p>A dosha has qualities of its own. It needs food and an environment with the opposite qualities to get balanced. For example: if your dosha has the quality &#8216;dry&#8217;, it needs food and an environment with the quality &#8216;moist&#8217;.</p>
<p>You can test what your predominant dosha is at <a title="Test" href="http://www.holisticonline.com/ayurveda/w_ayurveda-dtest1.htm" target="_blank">holisticonline.com</a> (Gerber = pitta, Laura = kapha).</p>
<p>In this article the focus is on nutrition. Expect a more in depth article about the three doshas in the near future. <p><strong>Vata</strong><br />
Vata is a combination of ether and air. Its qualities are light, cool and dry. To balance this dosha you need food that is heavy, warm and moist.</p>
<p>Good flavors: sweet, salt, sour.<br />
Good nutrition: soup, (sweet) potatoes, pumpkin, olive oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, honey, yoghurt, grains.<br />
Bad nutrition: cabbage, legumes, dried fruit, salads.</p>
<p><strong>Pitta</strong><br />
Pitta is a combination of fire and water. Its qualities are moist, hot and light. To balance this dosha you need food that is dry, cool and heavy.</p>
<p>Good flavors: bitter, sweet.<br />
Good nutrition: potatoes, rice crackers, basmati rice*, mint, raw broccoli, cucumber, spinach, salads, legumes (like chickpeas), coconut oil, sunflower oil*, melon, citrus fruit, soybean products.<br />
Bad nutrition: too much oil (other than coconut oil or sunflower oil), cheese, spicy food (peppers).</p>
<p><strong>Kapha</strong><br />
Kapha is a combination of water and earth. Its qualities are heavy, moist and cool. To balance this dosha you need food that is light, dry and hot.</p>
<p>Good flavors: bitter, spicy.<br />
Good nutrition: tea (especially ginger tea), apple, pear, dried fruit, leek, chili, mustard, garlic, corn, spinach.<br />
Bad nutrition: cool water, yoghurt, milk, cheese, meat.</p>
<p><strong>General Remarks</strong><br />
The temperature of the food is not the same as the quality of the food. For example: yoghurt is kept in the fridge but is not cool. In fact, yoghurt is a warming kind of nutrition.<br />
Basmati rice and sunflower oil can be eaten by all types of doshas.</p>
<p><strong>Gunas</strong><br />
One more way to distinguish between several diets is by looking at the three gunas: sattva, rajas and tamas.</p>
<ul>
<li>Sattvic food is pure and fresh; excellent to eat before a yoga session. Examples are: vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, herbal tea, fresh/raw dairy products (not from the supermarket).</li>
<li>Rajastic food is activating nutrition (not good for pitta), like alcohol, coffee, strong spices, onions, garlic, eggs, fish and chocolate.</li>
<li>Tamastic food is heavy (not good for kapha), like meat, overripe vegetables and fruit.</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="size-full wp-image-358 alignright" style="margin: 2px;" title="yoga" src="http://everydayimprovement.com/blog/images/yoga_small.jpg" alt="yoga" width="180" height="252" align="right" />About 4 months ago I wrote a <a href="http://everydayimprovement.com/blog/2008/10/power-yoga-my-first-experience/" target="_blank">post about my first power yoga experience</a>. Now, I still practise power yoga once a week, although I would like to do this more often. I&#8217;d like to share the experiences I&#8217;ve had with power yoga during the last few months. These are the benefits I get from doing power yoga:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Power yoga gives me more energy. </strong>I have more energy after a yoga session, but also in my everyday life: I no longer feel extreme tiredness.</li>
<li><strong>Power yoga makes me relax.</strong> I can relax better during a yoga session, after a yoga session and also on other moments. Only when I have a lot of stress, I don&#8217;t always manage to relax. Maybe I can still improve this by better concentration on my breathing.</li>
<li><strong>Power yoga makes me feel better.</strong> I feel more love for myself and my body and definitely more <a href="http://everydayimprovement.com/blog/2008/12/how-to-think-more-positively-and-reduce-stress/" target="_blank">positivity</a>!</li>
<li><strong>It&#8217;s nice that I can see my progress very clearly. </strong>I have made progress on doing the poses and on controlling my breathing. Maybe I will leave the beginners lesson soon and start doing advanced lessons.</li>
<li><strong>Power yoga is fun! </strong>Give yourself the time to work out and to relax, give your body the attention it needs and try new poses!</li>
</ul>
