A few days ago Laura told me that in about a week from now it is No Impact Week in The Netherlands (starts on November 7th, 2010). This is a project based upon what the No Impact Man, Colin Beavan did in New York City for a year (more on that later in this blog post). What it basically means is, that you try not to have an impact on the environment.

Taste the Waste
To get in the mood we watched the documentary Taste the Waste a few days ago. This documentary shows how much good food is wasted every day in the supermarket and at other places, because of what we, consumers, want from our food. Very confronting stuff.

You can watch the trailer for Taste the Waste below.

No Impact Man
Today I decided to watch the documentary No Impact Man. Laura had already seen it a few months ago. In this documentary we follow Colin Beavan and his family for a whole year as they try to have no impact on the environment. That means no garbage, no TV (well, no electricity at all), no car, not buying any new things, and much more. They get their food at local farmer markets and find all kinds of new ways to use existing things in their house. At first, this seems really drastic. But after a while you notice that they are beginning to enjoy life a bit more and their relationship improves (not at first, because it is his project and his wife does not always agree with his new way of life). They reconnect more with nature, feel healthier and enjoy their food more. And because there is no electricity, they spend more time together. Few will want to do what he and his family have done, but you will most certainly think about some of the things you can do to help your environment, your own wallet, and your relationships.

I can go on and on about this documentary, but you really have to see it for yourself. Here is the trailer:

If you want to watch the whole documentary, you can buy the DVD at Amazon.com. Colin has also written a book about this.

If you want to read more about this, check out Colin Beavan’s blog. And if you would like to do more with this, go to No Impact Project.

I would love to hear your view on this. Let me know by placing a comment below.

With love,
Gerber

Last week I have published a report on how to overcome your fear of public speaking and it also includes a chapter about EFT. I will share that with you here. The full report can be found at SelfImprovementLibrary.com (my other site).

EFT
We will be using a technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and is also known as Tapping. If you are new to EFT, check out the article How to Get Started with EFT.

EFT can help you to erase the source of your fear of public speaking, get rid of the physical symptoms of anxiety and feel confident and calm whenever you need to present your ideas to others.

Issues
What you want to do first is write down all the symptoms of anxiety you experience when speaking in public. Do your hands keep shaking? Does you heart feel like it’s pounding out of your chest?

After that, write down all the feelings you associate with public speaking. How does standing in front of a large crowd make you feel? Do you have trouble remembering your speech? Write all those down.

Tackle Those Symptoms and Issues One by One
What you do now, is release those symptoms, feelings, fears, doubts and issues by tackling them with EFT one by one.

If for instance your heart is pounding like crazy whenever you need to give a speech, you could apply EFT to this by doing the following:

Write down the intensity of the feeling, like mentioned in the article about How to Get Started with EFT.

Tap the Karate Chop point while repeating the following affirmation three times: “Even though my heart is pounding like crazy when I need to give a speech, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Go through the whole sequence of tapping on different parts of your body, while repeating the following reminder phrase: “My heart is pounding like crazy when I need to give a speech.”

Measure the intensity again and see if the intensity has dropped.

You can go through all your fears, doubts and issues this way. If you need more information about EFT, read my article How to Get Started with EFT again or look for some videos on YouTube or articles on Google by searching for EFT and Tapping.

An excellent product about public speaking and EFT is Eliminate Your Fear of Public Speaking: Finding Your Voice with EFT by Carol Look & Christine Wheeler.

Report
This is just one chapter from the report How to Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking. Although this information alone could help you eliminate your fear of public speaking, the report gives you much more information on how to analyze your fear and conquer it. And it gives you some easy-to-use tips on how to become a more confident and better speaker.

I’m finishing my second report this week. This one is about how to prepare a first class speech.

Talk to you later,
Gerber

Last night I finally watched Meat the Truth. Meat the Truth is a documentary, presented by Marianne Thieme (leader of the Dutch Party for the Animals), which forms an addendum to earlier films that have been made about climate change and global warming. Although An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore succeeded in drawing public attention to the issue of global warming, it ignored one of the most important causes of climate change: intensive livestock production. According to Meat the Truth livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars and trucks added together. The calculations used in the film derive from and have been validated by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN (FAO), the World Watch Institute, the Institute for Environmental Studies of the Free University Amsterdam and numerous other authoritative sources. That means that you can do more for the environment by eating less meat than by leaving your car at home. You can find more background information on the Meat the Truth website.

The documentary also features the first episode of a cartoon called The Meatrix. Follow the adventures of Leo, Moopheus and Chickity below.

The Meatrix

The Meatrix II: Revolting

The Meatrix II 1/2

More Information
These episodes show some of the problems concerning meat and dairy production. If you would like more information on this topic, I suggest you read the book The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World by John Robbins. For me this was truly a life changing book. The book comes up with facts on meat and dairy, that I had never heard of before. I’ve been vegan ever since I read it.

Does that mean everybody should be vegan from now on? Well, that could be a big step for a lot of people. What you can do in the short term is eat less meat and dairy. For instance, make one day in the week a meat-less day. This can be as simple as replacing the meat at dinner with a tofu burger. If more people do this, this can become a great step in saving our planet. And this can also do wonders for your own health too.

Although I like going places, I know traveling from place to place is bad for the environment – especially if you travel by air. In a few days I will go to Rome… by air. I have decided to compensate the CO2 emission of my flight. I searched the web and found the GreenSeat organization. Their website has a lot of information on compensation of CO2 emission. GreenSeat plants new trees and invests in renewable energy. I was quite shocked to read that the CO2 emisson of my flight has the same volume as that of an average European car driver in 4 months! 30 trees need to grow for 1 year to compensate the CO2 emission I have caused. The compensation cost me about 8 euros.

Rome is not so far from here. Next week, Gerber is flying 15,000 kms (9,300 miles) all the way to Surinam! You can imagine that he has to compensate a lot more CO2 than I do: his CO2 emission is equal to that of an average European driver in 20 months and 165 trees are needed during 1 year to compensate it.

It gives me stuff to think about. Do I really need to go by air? Probably, next time I’ll travel, I’ll check if there are any other possibilities. I will also look for eco traveling or slow traveling. Of course I will inform you by writing an article about my discoveries on this blog.

If you’d like to read more on CO2 emission, or if you’d like to compensate CO2 emission, you’ll find what you need on www.greenseat.com.

Have a nice (green) flight!
