On Finishing What You Start and Planning

I was working on one of my many unfinished articles, as usual. Suddenly I stopped and thought… Why can’t I focus on one thing at the time and finish something before I start something else?

This is probably my most personal article yet. I need to get this off my chest, but hopefully you can gain something from this too.

What Do I Start Next?
I’m always working on more than one article at the same time. Right now I’m working on the following articles:

  • How to Build Self-Esteem
  • How to Build Charisma
  • My Favorite Personal Development Books
  • How to Read Other People
  • How to Give Negative Feedback
  • Inspirational and Motivational Quotes by Anthony Robbins

Furthermore, I’m also working on the following:

And I’m always thinking on how to market this blog. Sometimes I’m playing with Twitter for hours, before I ask myself what I exactly achieved in the past few hours. Usually, not much related to marketing this blog.

It can be much more efficient to complete one thing before starting the next, but it seems I can’t focus long enough.

Managing projects
This got me thinking. How do I do this while I’m at work? My daytime job as a project manager has taught me how to plan my work and make sure everything gets done in time. I do this for a living for God’s sake. I hardly plan anything when I’m at home. Most of the time I don’t really know my outcome before I start something. When I write an article on a specific subject I always think I need to work more on it before it can be published. And off I go, researching the subject more in books and on the internet. Sure, I learn a lot about the subject doing this. But I’m not sure if that’s always necessary. More than that, it usually takes quite an amount of time to research a particular subject (even if I already know a lot about this subject). And if you dive deep into a subject you come up with related subjects and then this gives me an idea for a new article. The result: another  unfinished article and again starting a new one.

Managing projects has also taught me how to delegate work (or outsource it). At home I do everything myself. It seems a waste of money to outsource something I can do myself. But I realize I don’t have time to do all those things. And I know there are other people who are much better in certain areas, like blog design. I already applied this to RockGuitarWorld.com. This isn’t my design, I paid someone else to convert an existing site theme to my blog. He even installed the WordPress blog. I can do all those things myself, but it takes time to do this well. Now all it cost me was the time to write an email and $60 for his efforts.

Planning
That’s it. I’m finishing this article now so that I can work on my plan for this blog. I’m going to describe the following:

  • What are my goals for this blog?
  • What do I need to do to reach these goals (in small steps)?
  • What resources do I need (money, time)?
  • What can I outsource?
  • What can I do to make this journey fun and exciting?

I’m suddenly full of inspiration, so I’m off now.

Take care,
Gerber

PS: I wrote this article in 20 minutes, without stopping. So it seems I can focus my efforts after all :-) .
