If you have a problem in your life and you haven’t solved it yet, it’s because the solution is probably outside your comfort zone. By expanding your comfort zone you will not only solve that particular problem, but you will also be able to cope with similar situations within your new comfort zone.

Expanding your comfort zone makes you feel good about yourself. It gives you extra confidence and keeps you learning and growing. And the best thing is that you can do it by taking small steps. You don’t have to go hang-gliding or climb the Mount Everest.

Here’s a list of ways to expand your comfort zone:

  1. Take a different route to work.
  2. Switch sides (of the bed) with your partner.
  3. Put on your other shoe first.
  4. Try some new food.
  5. Be the first to say “I love you”.
  6. Let someone else drive in your car, while you sit next to him or her.
  7. Don’t wear your watch during the weekend.
  8. Learn a foreign language.
  9. Have lunch at a different location than usual.
  10. Read a book in a genre you don’t usually read.
  11. Take a lesson in yoga.
  12. Get up an hour earlier than usual.
  13. Go to a seminar in another country.
  14. Learn to play the guitar.
  15. Don’t watch the news or read a paper for two weeks.
  16. Sit in a room and do absolutely nothing for a full hour.
  17. Smile at strangers.
  18. Delegate more of your work.
  19. Don’t complain or gossip for a whole week.
  20. Confront someone (with respect, of course) next time they are out of line.
  21. Do volunteer work in your neighborhood.

Some of the examples mentioned above can of course be turned around. If you’re the first to say “I love you”, let the other person say it first.

This is only a small list of ways to expand your comfort zone. Think about this for yourself and please share your ideas in the comments.

Try it and have fun! Maybe you will find out how liberating this can be.
