How to Meditate – Use Your Imagination

There are many ways to meditate. In this article I won’t go into all the different kinds of meditation. I will show you one fun exercise which is very fun to do and will help you to relax, improve your memory and sharpen your senses at the same time. You probably already know that your brain can’t distinguish between something experienced and something actively imagined. Well, let’s experience that.

First find yourself a quiet place, where you will not be disturbed for the following 30 minutes. I usually do this before I go to sleep, but that has the possible disadvantage that you can fall asleep in the middle of the exercise… which makes this also a good exercise if you can’t get to sleep.

Lie down and close your eyes. Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds and then exhale slowly. Repeat this a few times. Let the tension go with each exhale.

Now think of the house you lived in when you were young. Imagine walking up to the house and opening the front door. From now on take in every detail and use all of your senses.

Go from room to room and take in every detail. What do the walls, the floors and doors look like? How are the rooms decorated? And do not only use your eyes. What sound does the door make when you open it? How does it feel when you step on the carpet in your old bedroom with your bare feet? Walk around and notice how your body reacts when you walk on different surfaces and touch all sorts of objects. Maybe you feel a tingling sensation in your body when you touch something.

Continue to go from room to room and again take in every detail. You can continue this exercise as long as you want. You can walk into the garden and walk with your bare feet on the lawn and smell all the different flowers.

You will find that it becomes easier to visualize every time you do this. It’s like training a muscle. If you’ve used something from your memory, be surprised by all the memories coming back to you in the following hours and days. Things you have not thought about in ages. It’s fun!

You can repeat this fun exercise as often as you like and you don’t need to use something from your memory. Use your imagination to create anything you would like. Create your own reality and experience every moment of it.

If you do this exercise before you go to sleep, it could induce lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming allows you to take control of your dream and do whatever you want in your safe dream world. I will go into lucid dreaming some other time.

Next time you walk through your own house, take in all the possible details of your surroundings. You will notice things in your own house that you haven’t paid attention to before. This is a great way to sharpen your senses.

Use your imagination and have fun!
